Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, boasts a wealth of stone sculpture. An especially interesting genre is the Shinto Ta no Kami (field god), found only in Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures. Believed to bring abundant harvests, stone Ta no Kami can be found even today throughout the rice-producing countryside of these two prefectures. The phallic symbolism discernible on the back side of Ta no Kami suggests this deity's association with fertility and abundant harvests.
